Version date: June 29, 2004 www.911inquiry.org/LiteratureSurvey2.html [This document is a continual work in progress. For current updates and enlargements upon what follows please contact the author directly. There are many more references available for each category.] [John A. McCurdy currently is pursuing a Combined Honours in English & History at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. His research into Sept. 11 continues. John welcomes your inquiries. atilan2001b@yahoo.com] [For John's leading article on the subject, "Making a Case for 9/11 skepticism," go to http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/MCC311A.html] This literature outline represents a tentative attempt to make a broad sweep of the literature on 9/11 (September 11, 2001) that has been published and/or posted online over the last three years. It gathers together in one place the pertinent publishing information for authors and works of many political persuasions that appear to be worthy of due consideration by 9/11 researchers. The outline focuses almost exclusively on books, while including a number of exceptional articles. While comprehensive, the outline is certainly not conclusive; it is intended to serve as a founding initiative only. In most cases works have been categorized with confidence, though in some instances only an educated guess as to the full contents and implications of a work has governed the categorization process. Works have been separated into general categories: 1) Government Publications, in this case, by different branches of the US government; 2) Extra-Governmental Literature, such as works published by former government figures (ex., Zbigniew Brzezinski), by those known to have privileged access to government and intelligence circles (ex. Bill Gertz), and by think tanks linked in a fairly direct way to the US Government (ex., RAND Corporation). 4) Mainstream Literature based on the Official 9/11 Narrative. This category refers to works published for a broad audience by publishers whose authors and audiences generally hold to liberal or conservative world views. These writers accept the assumptions of the official 9/11 narrative: that the attacks took the United States by surprise or were successful because the United States experienced a massive ‘intelligence failure,’ and that any argument opposed to the fundamental assumptions and implications of the ’surprise’ and/or ‘intelligence failure’ narratives must be dismissed automatically as a ‘conspiracy theory.’ 3) Academic Literature refers to works published in a small selection of leading historical and political scholarly journals that - with one known exception - accept as beyond dispute the assumptions of the official 9/11 narrative noted above in (4). Leading works on the idea of “conspiracy” and “conspiracy theory” are included in this section. 5) Critical Literature based on the Official 9/11 Narrative. This category refers to works published for a more selective target audience, usually of a Left or Libertarian political persuasion, that fall outside the Academic Literature designation. While these writers accept the official 9/11 narrative as their starting point, many–if not most–are openly critical of the intelligence world and the response of the United States government to the 9/11 attacks. This is particularly true for Post-9/11 foreign policy (the ‘War on Terror’ and the so-called ‘Bush Doctrine’ of pre-emptive warfare). 6) 9/11 Skeptic and 9/11 Complicity Counter-Narrative Literature. Works gathered under this category heading are those authored by 9/11 Skeptics, who attempt primarily to show that the official 9/11 narrative is false (example, malcontentx), or they are authored by 9/11 Complicity Counter-Narrative advocates (example Michael C. Ruppert), who establish first that the official 9/11 narrative is false and proceed to develop alternative explanations and hypotheses to explain aspects of 9/11. Often a degree of US Government complicity in the 9/11 attacks is demonstrated or strongly suggested, ranging from the LIHOP hypothesis (Let It Happen On Purpose - that the US government had adequate foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks and allowed then to proceed for political gain), to what might be called ‘The Big Lie’ hypothesis: that 9/11 was a US government operation and that bin Laden and the hijackers were either patsies or infiltrated by double agents. Evidence supporting the so-called ‘Big Lie’ hypothesis is much stronger than most assume. I have also included a handful of Grand Conspiracy Narratives in this section, which posit the existence of the ‘Illuminati,’ of an elite global conspiracy to institute a ‘Prison Planet,’ or that highlight secret societies like the Skull & Bones. In forwarding this list, it is my hope that 9/11 researchers from across the political spectrum will be further encouraged and empowered to cross-examine evidence and arguments forwarded by those with alternate or or even ulterior agendas, whose work might otherwise be ignored. Listings are alphabetical. At the end of each page, the alphabetized listings on the right hand page (if they have not ended) continue in the left hand column of the next page. 1) US GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Administration].
